Brushing and Flossing with Braces

Posted .

If you are new to braces, you’ve probably learned that keeping them clean can be difficult. Fortunately, there are some tricks to make it easier. Blais Orthodontics in Scarsdale, New York, would be happy to share them with you.

While you adjust to your new braces, they can feel uncomfortable, especially if they are dirty. Braces, wires, springs, and rubber bands can hold and trap food particles and plaque. There are actually special tools you can use to brush and floss your teeth with braces effectively.

You’ll want to brush your teeth with a normal toothbrush, but you may notice that there is still food stuck in the wiring. In this case, it’s time to get out an interdental brush. This is a small brush that you can slip under the wire and move slowly up and down to remove tough and clingy particles.

You also may have difficulty slipping your floss in between the wires. In this case, use a floss threader to slip it between the wires and brackets and the gumline. You can also try a water flosser. This uses a concentrated stream of water to jet between crevices in your teeth.
