Sometimes during orthodontic treatment, the best course of action for keeping your teeth straight after your braces are removed is for Dr. Merissa Blais to install a permanent fixed retainer. These are usually placed on your front teeth and are generally only used when those teeth needed pretty serious realignment.

This means that once your braces are off, you’ll still have some type of orthodontic equipment in your mouth. That means you’ll need to take extra care when cleaning your teeth. Let’s look at some tips from our team here at Blais Orthodontics for doing just that.

Since a fixed retainer is cemented in place and can’t be removed, it will require daily brushing and flossing, similar to your old braces. To help brush away plaque and food particles from hard-to-reach places, you might want to try using interdental brushes.

If you find it difficult to floss between your teeth and around the fixed retainer, you might want to try using a floss threader with waxed dental floss. The wax coating helps the strand of floss slip into place easier.
