Safe & Unsafe Treats When Wearing Braces

Posted .

Times may be tough if you have braces and a sweet tooth. However, there is no need to fret. It’s true that some treats cannot be enjoyed with braces, but there are many sweet treats and snacks that are safe for you to enjoy. Our orthodontist and team can go over treats to avoid and safe treats when wearing braces in Scarsdale, New York.

Treats to Avoid
When on the search for sweets, avoid those that are hard, chewy or sticky. Some specific treats to avoid include licorice, caramel, gum, suckers, taffy and hard pretzels. These snacks could bend or break your brackets and wires.

Safe Treats
We suggest that you stick to safe snacks, like soft foods. Chocolate, peanut butter, milkshakes, ice cream, and gelatin-based candies are all safe and tasty choices. If you want a healthier sweet snack, fruit is a great choice. Berries like strawberries and raspberries are awesome options, as they are soft. Hard fruits like apples should be cut into thin slices. After you consume something sugary and sweet, be sure brush your teeth or to rinse out your mouth with water. This can help protect both your teeth and your braces.
