Sports and Braces: Finding the Perfect Mouthguard

Posted .

Have you ever been hit in the mouth while playing a sport? Better yet, have you ever been hit in the mouth when you had braces? It’s not fun and it is extremely painful, which is why it is very important to wear a mouthguard while you are participating in your high-contact activities. If you don’t currently have a mouthguard to wear, here are your options:

Stock mouthguards
Stock mouthguards are available at your local sporting goods store. They are generally the cheapest option available and they are ready to go once taken out of the package. These guards offer minimal protection and they may feel a bit bulky.

Boil-and-bite mouthguards
Boil-and-bite mouthguards can be made to fit your specific smile. Once you purchase the guard at the store, you will need to put it into a pot of boiling water, place it into your mouth, and firmly bite down. Then, you will apply pressure to the guard with your tongue and fingers. This will shape the guard to fit your smile perfectly. Once the guard cools, it will harden into shape. This guard offers moderate protection and it is made of a rubber-like material.

Custom-made mouthguards
Custom-made mouthguards are the best option if you want a comfortable appliance that offers the most protection. However, this is also the most expensive guard available. This guard will be created in a dental lab after your dentist or orthodontist makes impressions of your smile. Once you get the guard back, you will have an appliance that fits perfectly over your teeth and braces.

If you wear one of these mouthguards, your smile and braces will be protected from the hard, forceful objects that hit them and you won’t experience the painful sensation that comes along with it. If you would like to know more about these mouthguards or if you would like to talk to Dr. Merissa Blais about the custom-made mouthguard option, please call our office at 914.472.9595 today.
